Every lithium-ion pack in your facility spends most of its life charging. Where it charges is a decision most operations never actually make — packs end up on a shelf near the racking, on a bench in the maintenance bay, or sitting inside a machine parked wherever the last operator left it. A charging vault turns that default into a controlled, monitored, documented process.

Why charging location is the whole problem

Lithium-ion failures are not evenly distributed across a battery's life. The charge cycle is when cells are under electrical stress, when a damaged or defective cell is most likely to enter thermal runaway, and when the pack is typically unattended. A failure on a charging bench is a failure with combustible stock, packaging, and racking within a few feet of it.

Once thermal runaway starts in a lithium-ion cell, it is self-sustaining. It does not need external oxygen to propagate, and standard water-based suppression is aimed at controlling the surrounding fire rather than stopping the reaction inside the pack. Fire protection guidance treats bulk lithium-ion storage as a hazard that is difficult to control once ignited — which makes containment and early detection far more valuable than suppression after the fact.

What a vault actually changes

  • Separation. Charging happens inside fire-resistant steel, away from racking, stock, and egress paths.
  • Early detection. Integrated smoke detection and audible alarm mean a failing pack is announced rather than discovered.
  • Automatic power shutoff. Power is cut on detection instead of continuing to push current into a failing cell.
  • Ventilation. Cooling fans manage the heat load of a full charging bank under normal operation.
  • A defined process. Packs have one place to go. That is auditable; a bench is not.

Removable packs make this possible

A charging vault is only an option when the battery comes out of the equipment.

Equipment built around an integrated, non-removable pack — the architecture used by most traditional burden carriers, stock chasers, and golf-cart-derived platforms — has to be charged wherever the unit is parked. The charging location is determined by the vehicle's footprint and the location of an available outlet, not by a safety plan. There is no way to move that charge cycle into a monitored enclosure, because the pack cannot be separated from the machine.

TexTrack units use removable battery packs. That single architectural difference is what lets a facility move every charge cycle in the building into a vault, run swap-and-go on multi-shift operations, and take a suspect or damaged pack out of service without deadlining the vehicle.

The regulatory picture

There is no OSHA standard that specifically mandates lithium-ion charging cabinets. What exists is a set of general duties and published guidance that a safety manager is expected to act on:

  • OSHA Fact Sheet 4480 covers lithium-ion battery hazards in the workplace, and directs employers to build lithium-related incident response into the emergency action plan, following manufacturer instructions and NFPA guidance for thermal runaway events, and to train exposed workers on the associated physical and health hazards. The fact sheet is informational and imposes no new compliance requirements on its own.
  • NFPA guidance is the referenced authority for battery failure response.
  • FM Global Data Sheet 8-1 provides the prescriptive criteria available for lithium-ion storage scenarios, including state-of-charge limits.
  • Insurance carriers increasingly ask how lithium-ion charging is controlled on site. A documented enclosure is a straightforward answer.

Sizing guidance

Count the packs that charge simultaneously at peak, not the total packs you own. A two-shift operation running swap-and-go typically charges the full off-shift set at once. Add 20–25% headroom for fleet growth and for packs pulled from service for diagnostic charging. If you are spread across multiple buildings, several compact vaults usually beat one large vault — the goal is to eliminate the walk that tempts someone to charge at the nearest bench instead.

Common questions

Does a vault replace my sprinkler system?

No. A vault is containment, detection, and power control for the charging process. It works alongside your facility's fire protection, and your AHJ and insurance carrier remain the authorities on what your building requires.

Can I charge any brand of battery in it?

The vaults provide standard outlets and adjustable perforated shelving, so they accommodate a range of pack sizes and chargers. Charge according to each battery manufacturer's instructions.

What if I have equipment with non-removable packs?

A vault will not help with those units — the pack has to come out to go inside. If you are running mixed equipment, we can quote vaults for the removable-pack portion of the fleet and talk through what replacement timing looks like for the rest.
