What Is a Burden Carrier?

A burden carrier is a powered industrial vehicle that carries a burden — a load, an operator, or both — across a facility floor. It fills the gap between walking and a forklift: too small a job for a lift truck, too heavy or too far for a hand truck.

You will also see these sold as stockchasers, warehouse tugs, personnel carriers, or industrial electric carts. Manufacturers use the names inconsistently, so the distinctions that matter when specifying one:

On top speed: 15 mph is the vehicle ceiling, not a recommended indoor operating speed. The limiter and three-mode speed control let you set the unit to your own facility speed policy at commissioning. Most sites run aisle work in low or medium mode.

How to Specify a Burden Carrier

  1. Measure your narrowest working aisle at the tightest point, not the average. This eliminates most of the market fastest.
  2. Define the actual payload — weight and dimensions. A high weight rating on a deck too small for your load is useless.
  3. Count the shift hours. Past about five hours you need swappable batteries plus spares, or a second unit.
  4. Check the floor — ramps, grades, dock plates, floor joints. Confirm your steepest grade against the rating.
  5. Confirm serviceability. Ask what a wheel, motor, or battery swap costs and how long it takes. Downtime usually outweighs purchase price.

What is the difference between a burden carrier and an electric tug?

A burden carrier carries the load on its own deck. An electric tug tows carts behind it and carries nothing itself. If your material is already on wheeled carts, a tug may suit you better.

How long does the battery last?

3–5 hours per charge on a 48 V pack. The battery is swappable, so facilities running longer shifts keep spares on a charger and exchange them rather than taking the vehicle out of service.

Do operators need training or certification?

Training and certification requirements depend on how a vehicle is classified and on your jurisdiction — some powered industrial trucks fall under OSHA operator training requirements and others do not. Confirm the classification of any specific vehicle with the manufacturer and with your own EHS team before deployment. We are happy to provide documentation to support that review.

Can it operate in narrow aisles?

That depends entirely on the vehicle. Most burden carriers are scaled-down utility vehicles needing an open corridor to turn. The zero-degree turning design was built specifically for facilities where that corridor does not exist.
